Substation Electrician

Job Summary

A Substation Electrician will operate, maintain, install, adjust, inspect, modify, test, troubleshoot and repair main and auxiliary equipment and apparatus. This may include overseeing sub-contractors doing electrical wiring, switchboard wiring, transformer connections, switchgear, bus work, low voltage control cables, electrical and electronic equipment. The Substation Electrician will be required to perform distribution substation switching and grounding.

The person will be required to work on a standby rotational schedule and must carry a cellphone that remains on for the entire time the person is on standby. Standby schedule will be determined by how many resources are in the rotation. Typical on-call shift is for 7 days per week / 24 hours per day. Full-Time (FT) approximately 40 hours per week.

Location: Burnaby

Responsibilities

  • Must be able to arrive at the Substation (Lower Mainland, BC) within one hour of being called.
  • Will respond to alarms, 12kV feeder outages and 60kV station outages.
  • Control room switching to restore power and record and log this information.
  • Will read, record, and reset protection flags.
  • Act as Qualified Electrical Station Responder/ PIC (once qualified) – Station familiarization and training provided by Allteck.
  • Must be an IBEW Local 258 Union member or willing to become a member.
  • If the individual is Local 258 member, work alongside the field crews to make the position full-time outside the on-call rotation.
  • Delivering material/equipment, assisting line crews, assisting URD crews, and potentially assisting feeder cable crews.
  • Option to fill the non-standby time with other duties and responsibilities, as required and assigned, throughout the lower mainland operations.

Skills & Abilities

  • Preference will be given to an individual that has a PIC background and to individuals that can perform switching, grounding, and emergency circuit isolation.
  • Must be reliable and dependable to respond when on call.
  • Effective attention to detail regarding safety, equipment health and restoration protocols
  • Strong communication skills – verbal and written.
  • Strong trouble shooting skills – problem identification and can work independently.

Education, Training & Experience

  • Red Seal Electrician with minimum ten (10) or more years in Substation Operation/ Maintenance/ Construction Experience.
  • Power Systems Engineer (PSE) an asset.
  • Should have a strong understanding of substation alarms and protection.
  • Class 3 license an asset to maintain FT hours.
